T-Mobile Enhances KPMG Women’s PGA Championship with 5G Solutions

T-Mobile Media Release | June 18, 2024

BELLEVUE, Wash. — June 18, 2024 — Following the successful implementation of 5G-powered fan experiences at the PGA Championship, T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) has announced a partnership with the PGA of America to bring these innovative technologies to the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. T-Mobile’s 5G solutions will enhance the event with real-time player data, improved broadcast views, and streamlined event operations at Sahalee Country Club from June 20-23.

Access Detailed Player Data with KPMG CHAMPCAST and T-Mobile 5G

For the first time at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, fans can access detailed player data through the new KPMG CHAMPCAST presented by T-Mobile. This feature, available online and via the PGA Championships App, delivers ShotLink Pro 2.0 data, including 3D imagery, radar data, shot trails, green views, and individual shot video highlights. On-site fans will also enjoy a Toptracer feed broadcast on the videoboard at the T5G Range, thanks to T-Mobile’s 5G network.

T-Mobile 5G Enhances Live Broadcast Coverage of the Championship

Building on the success at the PGA Championship, T-Mobile’s 5G-connected cameras will enhance the live broadcast by covering more holes in real time. NBC Sports will utilize T-Mobile’s scalable 5G portable private network to deploy additional cameras, bringing more live golf action to viewers on NBC, Peacock, and GOLF Channel.

Enjoy VIP Perks at the T-Mobile Club Magenta Lounge

Attendees at the Championship will benefit from exclusive VIP experiences at the T-Mobile Club Magenta lounge. Open to all attendees, this lounge offers premium views of the 10th fairway, complimentary phone charging, a 5G-connected PuttView augmented reality experience, and surprise visits from notable guests. T-Mobile customers can enjoy additional perks, including free T-Mobile folding chairs and complimentary cocktails.

Nelly Korda, the No. 1 player in the world and T-Mobile athlete, expressed her excitement about the event: “This Championship is one of the biggest weeks in women’s golf, and T-Mobile’s support has elevated it even further. The technology improvements allow us and the fans to engage with data from every shot throughout the week like never before.”

5G-Driven Operational Efficiencies at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship

T-Mobile’s 5G network brings significant operational efficiencies, reducing the need for hard-wired infrastructure and resource-intensive deployments. This includes:

  • Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Data Delivery: The ShotLink team captured 47GB of data to create a digital twin of the golf course, allowing fans to follow every shot with centimeter-level accuracy. 5G technology reduced data transfer time by nearly 75%.
  • Fiber-Like Speeds for Broadcast: T-Mobile’s 5G portable private network, combined with Sony’s portable data transmitters and high-efficiency coding devices, enables NBC to deploy more cameras capturing live content in 4K at 60 FPS. This setup ensures superfast data speeds and glass-to-glass latency averaging under 100 milliseconds.
  • Optimized Event Operations: Utilizing network slicing, event operators can ensure seamless payment processing, ticket scanning, and event photography. This allows photographers to send high-quality images over 5G directly from the course, connects concession payment terminals and ticketing scanners, and supports real-time communication for staff with T-Mobile Mission Critical Push to Talk.

Jeff Price, Chief Commercial Officer of the PGA of America, emphasized the impact of 5G: “We are ecstatic to continue delivering enhanced experiences to fans through our partnership with T-Mobile. From real-time shot data to transforming the way broadcasters connect fans to the action on the course, 5G has already made a significant impact on the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.”

T-Mobile’s Commitment to Women’s Golf: Sponsoring Brooke Henderson and Nelly Korda

In line with its commitment to promoting women’s golf, T-Mobile is now a proud sponsor of Brooke Henderson, who returns to Sahalee where she won the 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Starting this week, Henderson will sport the T-Mobile logo and collaborate with the brand in various ways, including bringing magenta touches to the course. This sponsorship complements T-Mobile’s ongoing partnership with world No. 1 Nelly Korda, who is featured in a new T-Mobile advertisement and other brand initiatives.

More than $14 billion has been invested across the CBRS stacklicenses, RAN, devices, infrastructure, sensors, and software. Over 420,000 CBRS radio nodes (CBSDs) are in service. The device ecosystem is broad: Apple and Samsung ship n48-capable handsets; industrial and FWA suppliers support n48 CPEs and routers; Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, JMA Wireless and others provide radio and DAS. This is not a pilot; it is production infrastructure. Refarming would force replacement or retuning of hundreds of thousands of base stations and millions of end devices, plus upgrades to SAS integrations and enterprise control planes.

Lufthansa Industry Solutions and Ericsson are tackling logistics bottlenecks with private 5G. At the LAX warehouse, they replaced unreliable Wi-Fi with just two private 5G radios, reducing scanning delays by 97% and eliminating paper logs. South Korea’s government and its three national carriers are aligning fresh capital to speed AI and semiconductor competitiveness and to anchor a private-led innovation flywheel. SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus will seed a new pool exceeding 300 billion won (about $219 million) via the Korea IT Fund (KIF) to back core and foundational AI, AI transformation (AX), and commercialization in ICT. KIF, formed in 2002 by the carriers, will receive 150 billion won in new commitments, matched by at least an equal amount from external fund managers. The platforms lifespan has been extended to 2040 to sustain long-cycle bets.
A new joint solution from Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) and the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA) consolidates electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and antenna measurements into a single, production-grade test chamber, signaling a shift in how satellite payloads will be validated for Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) and mission-critical services. By integrating both disciplines in one chamber, TASA can validate RF performance, emissions, and immunity under consistent test conditions and configurations, improving time-to-launch and de-risking interoperability with terrestrial networks. The TASA deployment combines R&S hardware, software, and engineering with a locally built Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) reflector to achieve dual-mode EMC and antenna measurements in one chamber.
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), representing Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, is pushing back against direct 5G spectrum allocation for enterprises. COAI argues that India’s urban coverage, revenue priorities, and national security risks make an operator-led model via spectrum leasing or network slicing, more viable. The Department of Telecommunications is reviewing TRAI’s recommendation, with the decision set to shape India’s private 5G market for years.
