o2 Telefónica is integrating quantum technologies into its mobile network to improve performance and explore new data security standards. As the digital landscape evolves, quantum technologies are providing new methods to solve complex computational problems that are difficult for classical systems to solve, while also enabling quantum-resistant encryption.
o2 Telefónica has achieved a breakthrough in the telecommunications industry: just six months after the launch of the innovative 5G Cloud Core, one million customers in Germany can already use the advanced, cloud-based core network for mobile surfing and telephony.
o2 Telefónica is creating greater flexibility in its own transport network with the so-called “whiteboxing” approach. With this new concept, the telecommunications provider ensures that the software and hardware of the numerous switching centers in the transport network – so-called IP routers – are decoupled from each other. This enables the company to remotely install vendor-independent software updates on the existing routers.

o2 Telefónica introduces new contract tariffs for its core brand o2. The o2 Mobile tariff portfolio will be simplified and underpins o2's claim to be the value-for-money leader in the German market. On 6 November 2024, o2's new mobile contract tariffs will be launched across all sales channels.
For a year now, o2 Telefónica has been offering the real 5G, also known as 5G-Standalone (5G SA) or “5G Plus”, across its entire 5G network. The rollout of the 5G network began in October 2020. Just three years later, the telecommunications provider opened access to 5G Standalone for its customers.
o2 Telefónica has reached a milestone in the further development of 5G. By bundling four frequency bands in 5G standalone mode, the company achieved peak download speeds of more than 1.7 gigabits per second. For comparison: that is almost twice as fast as the most powerful commercial fiber-optic connections currently available.
Strong networks, low prices, high variety: Ten years after the merger of o2 Telefónica and E-Plus on October 1, 2014, the range of services for mobile phone users in Germany has improved significantly.

Effective immediately, Lyca Mobile, one of the world's leading international mobile virtual network operators (MVNO), will offer its customers in Germany with mobile services via the high-performance network infrastructure of o2 Telefónica.
