Simplifying Multi-Vendor Integration and Interoperability Across RAN, Core, and Edge

In what ways does Spirent simplify multi-vendor integration and interoperability for CSPs managing RAN, core, and edge environments?

Speaker: Anil Kolipara

When it comes to achieving multi-vendor integration and interoperability across RAN, core, and edge environments, there are three key aspects to consider.

  • Expanding Testing Categories: First, itโ€™s about what you are actually testing. For instance, 3GPP specifications typically define functional or compliance requirements, but they donโ€™t cover performance, reliability, or resilience testing.ย To ensure full interoperability, CSPs must evolve beyond traditional functional and compliance testing. They need to incorporate non-functional testing โ€” which includes performance, capacity, reliability, and resiliency evaluations.ย For example, in a 5G cloud-native infrastructure, itโ€™s crucial to understand what happens when impairments occur in the core network. Is the service still reliable and resilient? Conducting these non-functional, complex testing scenarios ensures real-world readiness.
  • Evolving Test Methodology: The second aspect is the test methodology itself. Spirent supports what we call wraparound testing, where each network function or element is isolated and tested to ensure it complies with specifications.ย This approach then expands to adjacent testing and end-to-end testing, verifying that all multi-vendor components work seamlessly together. By identifying interoperability gaps early, CSPs can fix issues before deployment โ€” ensuring a smoother integration process.
  • Continuous Automation: Finally, and most importantly, is automation. Spirent enables CSPs to embed both functional and non-functional testing into an automated, continuous framework. Testing cannot be a one-time or sporadic activity; networks evolve constantly, and so must validation.ย By automating the testing process, CSPs can continuously verify performance, reliability, and compliance every time a change occurs โ€” whether thatโ€™s a new vendor, software update, or configuration shift.

Together, these three pillars โ€” comprehensive testing categories, advanced methodologies, and automation โ€” enable CSPs to confidently manage and optimize multi-vendor RAN, core, and edge environments with consistency and reliability.
