Question:
Could you briefly describe how the collaboration between LMT and Druid Software began, and what motivated the decision to deploy Latvia’s first private 5G network at the Freeport of Riga?
Karlis Vilciņš (Head of Systems Integration Business, LMT):
We had been exploring this opportunity for some time because it represented a promising new technology.
However, since we are not located in the very center of Europe, where most economic activity takes place, we understood that achieving the best possible business case might be more challenging in our environment.
We were actively looking for opportunities, and that’s when Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) approached us. They had a real business challenge, which became the main reason we decided to carry out the private 5G project together with them.
At that time, the container terminal was operating on a legacy Wi-Fi solution that had reached its end of life. They needed to make a strategic decision — either switch to a newer technology that could enable future automation and robotics, or reinvest in Wi-Fi and continue facing the same known limitations.
Ultimately, they chose to innovate. Their business challenge centered on achieving reliable connectivity across the container terminal — and that’s what drove the collaboration and deployment of Latvia’s first private 5G network.
