Scope of remote patient assessment via 5G connected ambulance

Ooredoo Qatar, partnered with Ericsson and demonstrated remote patient assessment and ultrasound procedure inside an 5G connected ambulance using a special haptic glove controlled by a doctor remotely using a specially designed joystick.

This use case provided a glimpse into how doctors could provide remote assistance to treat patients in movable vehicles. Paramedics will continue to use the ambulances to attend medical emergencies as they do now, but โ€“ with the new technology in the 5G connected ambulance โ€“ they will then be able to assess the patient using a special haptic glove that is controlled by the doctor remotely using a specially designed joystick.

Ooredooโ€™s 5G networks will enable information gathered to be sent to the doctor, wherever they are, so they can then offer diagnosis and treatment advice without the patient ever coming into physical contact with the doctor.

Benefits of remote patient monitoring via 5G connected ambulance

In situations where time is of the essence โ€“ such as the Emir Cup final, where an injured player needs to be back on the pitch as quickly as possible โ€“ 5G connected ambulance technology will revolutionise the way ambulances and medical staff can attend to medical emergencies in Qatar.

Partnership scope and approach

Ericsson is a primary business partner for implementing Ooredooโ€™s 5G infrastructure. Ooredoo and Ericsson formulated a relationship in early 2019 in order to implement 5G technologies, such as Ericsson Radio System, 5G New Radio, and Ericsson microwave solutions, and enhance the digital lives of people across Qatar. Playing a vital role in Ooredooโ€™s roadmap to 5G, Ericsson brought world-class expertise and technologies to the forefront to illustrate the immersive possibilities of connected 5G realities.

Ooredoo supported the legendary football event, held on Thursday, 16 May 2019, at the newly inaugurated South Stadium, where fans gathered in their thousands to watch one of the most popular sporting events of the year. In order to test as many capabilities of the new developments as possible, the stadium was equipped with the latest mobile technologies, including Elastic Cloud Radio Technology and Antennae with High Order MIMO, to provide the best customer experience.

In the South Stadium; Ooredoo and Ericsson demonstrated the future of 5G with a Virtual Stadium at Mall of Qatar and a 5G Connected Ambulance in the stadium itself. All this was achieved in a very limited timeframe, deploying antennas and installing extensive equipment in the final construction phase of the stadium.
