Investors seeking to maximize their profits from the potential of 5G should consider a multi-pronged approach and invest in companies that provide 5G network equipment, tower infrastructure, semiconductors, and hyperscalers as well as 5G mobile network operators. Here are the top companies across the sectors that are leading global public/private network rollouts.
DoT has started a procedure to identify the 5G spectrum bands, especially those with less commercial prospects for mobile operators for captive private networks. In its recommendations for the 5G auction, Trai suggested that at least 40 MHz blocks can be carved out in the 3700-3800 MHz and 4800-4990 MHz bands for captive private networks. It was also of the view that at least 400 MHz be earmarked in the 28.5-29.5 GHz band for private networks as well as satellite earth stations.
The U.S Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is now open to public comments regarding the formation and activation of the Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund (Innovation Fund). This fund is an opportunity for citizens to come together in order to create a better wireless system with innovative resources.
T-Mobile has achieved its year-end goal of covering 260 million people with Ultra Capacity 5G weeks ahead of schedule. Plus, the Un-carrier has now deployed an additional, new layer of 1900 MHz mid-band Ultra Capacity 5G spectrum nationwide to deliver greater speed and performance. T-Mobile’s overall 5G footprint expanded as well, now covering 323 million people.
The Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has estimated that at least 955 organizations have implemented LTE or 5G private mobile networks in 72 countries across the world. Despite the emergence of 5G, organizations still favor LTE, accounting for 40.9% of all private mobile network deployments. Manufacturing remains one of the most significant sectors for private networks, along with education and mining.
Nokia will deploy its 5G-ready IP/MPLS multiservice, mobile core, and radio access network (RAN) solutions at Société du Grand Paris (SGP) to support the implementation of four automated train lines that link 200 kilometers of Paris and up to two million passengers a day. The contract builds on Nokia’s relationship with SGP following the deployment of an LTE wireless network system to provide critical network connectivity across three of the new Paris metro lines.
T-Mobile has taken its 5G standalone (5G SA) network to the next level, lighting up mid-band Ultra Capacity spectrum on 5G SA nationwide. 5G SA is the future of wireless connectivity, immediately improving performance and paving the way for groundbreaking applications that leverage super-fast speeds, ultra-reliable low latency (real-time responsiveness), massive connectivity, and more.
Together with Combitech, Holmen Iggesund has launched a revolutionizing private 5G network that will enable Iggesund Mill to, step-by-step, become one of the most efficient and the most digitally advanced paperboard mills. This is the first step to connect the entire operations at the Iggesund Mill, and more areas will be included to secure the position as the most efficient and reliable mill in Sweden.
Nokia to support Nedaa on its journey to delivering next-generation 5G network capabilities by upgrading its networks and developing innovative use cases. Nedaa is targeting segment-oriented solutions by introducing network slicing to improve public safety and smart city services for concerned organizations and citizens, as well as lay the foundations for more advanced services such as metaverse.
American Tower Company (ATC) seeks authorization from the Federal Communications Commission to test the performance of a private 5G wireless network within the confines of an indoor commercial mall in Las Vegas, with the ultimate objective of deploying of hybrid public/private 5G wireless networks. An illustrative practical application of this testing of the private 5G network would be the activation and control of robotic in-store cleaners within mall stores after hours.
Reliance Jio recently announced that it would send out invites to Chennai users to experience 5G. Earlier, Jio had announced the 5G services for users in four cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Varanasi.
Orange Belgium and KPN will investigate how 5G technology can accelerate the further digitalization of one of Europe’s most important waterways. The aim is to define a low-altitude cross-border digital corridor for mobility applications and aviation that will make key nodes in the global supply chain, namely ports and hinterland waterways, more efficient, secure and sustainable. The high speed and ultra short response times (low latency) of the 5G networks will ensure secure and highly reliable connectivity.
MediaTek powered a smartphone with a 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) connection in a lab environment for the first time in collaboration with Rohde & Schwarz. 5G NTN technology will help boost service reliability across the globe by harnessing existing terrestrial networks and economies of scale in the cellular sector, making fast and reliable 5G connectivity much more accessible in unserved and underserved areas.
Smart and Omnispace are collaborating to explore space-based 5G technologies for use cases such as enabling 5G connectivity in remote areas, incorporating IoT and sensors for use in monitoring weather disturbances and natural calamities, and augmenting network coverage for disaster relief, maritime and telematics for vessels and equipment in Philippine market.
