New Era of 5G Connectivity at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light

Sunderland’s iconic Stadium of Light just got a digital upgrade. Boldyn Networks, in collaboration with Virgin Media O2, has deployed the UK’s first full neutral host RAN managed service in a high-density venue. This deployment, part of the Sunderland Open Network EcosysTem (SONET) project, delivers advanced 5G connectivity to fans and venue staff alike.

Overcoming Legacy Infrastructure and Limited Stadium Coverage

Before the upgrade, the stadium relied on decade-old infrastructure. Limited coverage, poor signal quality, and bandwidth constraints were common, especially during high-attendance events. This created a less-than-ideal experience for fans trying to share moments, order food, or access digital services. Traditional indoor architectures also consume significant power and space, leading to high operational costs.

Boldyn’s 5G CaaS Solution: A UK First in Stadium Connectivity

Boldyn Networks introduced its Connectivity-as-a-Service (CaaS) model at the Stadium of Light—marking a first for the UK. Using a fully virtualized Open RAN platform, the solution integrates a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) with JMA’s XRAN® technology. The result? Enhanced mobile coverage and up to 60% savings in energy and physical space.

This managed service is monitored and optimized via Boldyn’s Network Management System (NMS), digitizing and automating network assurance processes. This reduces the operational burden on mobile operators while boosting service levels.

Real-Time 5G Fan Experiences and Venue Operations Impact

O2 customers are the first to experience the benefits of this 5G-enabled infrastructure. They now enjoy seamless connectivity for video uploads, real-time stats, in-seat food ordering, and even personalized content—features that were previously unfeasible in crowded venues.

The project also supports venue operations, improving crowd safety, communications, and logistics behind the scenes.

Key 5G Technologies Powering the Stadium of Light Upgrade

At the heart of this deployment is Boldyn’s neutral host architecture. Key technologies include:

  • Virtualized O-RAN for space and power efficiency

  • JMA XRAN® stack for scalable 5G radio capabilities

  • Boldyn’s NMS for automated service assurance

  • Advanced DAS supporting O-RAN fronthaul interfaces

This combination not only supports multi-operator services but also allows the stadium to adapt quickly to future digital demands.

Key Benefits of Boldyn’s Neutral Host 5G Deployment

  • Enhanced Fan Engagement: High-speed 5G enables interactive and immersive experiences

  • Energy and Cost Efficiency: Reduced operational footprint by up to 60%

  • Operator Offload: Less need for dedicated MNO resources

  • Operational Support: Improves safety, logistics, and coordination during events

  • Smart Venue Capabilities: Real-time analytics, digital signage, and more

Transforming Stadiums & Smart Cities Through Neutral Host 5G

This deployment isn’t just about better game-day selfies. It’s a blueprint for how sports venues across the UK—and globally—can use private or neutral-host 5G networks to elevate both fan and operational experiences. With this project, Sunderland is also laying the groundwork for broader smart city innovation, from its stadium to its esports arena.

Boldyn Networks’ End-to-End Deployment and CaaS Management

Boldyn Networks led the deployment end-to-end, from design to implementation. Through its CaaS model, Boldyn not only delivers the infrastructure but also manages it, ensuring high reliability without burdening mobile network operators.

According to Brendan O’Reilly, CEO of UK & Ireland at Boldyn Networks: “This project underscores our commitment to delivering innovative connectivity solutions that enhance the digital experience for users in high-density environments, without sacrificing cost or energy efficiency.”

Collaboration with Virgin Media O2 and Sunderland AFC

Virgin Media O2 brought in its customer base and operational expertise. By making O2 customers the first to benefit, the telco helped validate the success of this deployment.

Dr Rob Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at Virgin Media O2, said: “This work with Boldyn Networks is ensuring match-going fans can experience a seamless connectivity experience.”

The Sunderland AFC club also played a key role. David Bruce, Chief Business Officer, highlighted: “This technology will unlock incredible opportunities to enhance the matchday experience for our supporters through faster connectivity, richer content, and more immersive engagement.”

5G Network Now Live at Sunderland Stadium of Light

The upgraded network is now live and fully operational. O2 customers are already experiencing the benefits, with other mobile operators expected to follow through the neutral host model.

  • Early 2024: Planning and design initiated under the SONET project

  • Mid-2024: Network infrastructure installed and tested

  • August 2025: Official go-live ahead of Sunderland AFC’s Premier League return and Women’s Rugby World Cup kickoff

Public-Private Support from DSIT Drives 5G Innovation

The project is part-funded by the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), showcasing strong public-private collaboration. This alignment not only supports economic growth but also ensures inclusive access to advanced digital infrastructure.

The collaboration between Boldyn Networks, Virgin Media O2, and the City of Sunderland is a real-world example of how 5G can transform fan experiences. By introducing a future-ready, energy-efficient, and scalable network model, the Stadium of Light is now a true “smart stadium”—and a benchmark for venues everywhere.
