What role does MIA’s private CBRS network play in advancing the Smart Airport 2.0 vision?
Speaker: Johnathan Lewis, Innovation Division Director, Miami Dade Aviation Department
Our private wireless network plays an integral role in our transformation to Smart Airport 2.0. It provides us with the flexibility to scale much more quickly than we could in the past.
The network allows us to place sensors and other devices in parts of the airport that were previously very challenging from an engineering and design perspective—such as ceilings, walls, and cement structures, where running data cables was difficult or restricted. Many factors made traditional installation prohibitive, but with the advent of our private wireless network, we can now place these devices in areas we couldn’t access before, and at a much lower cost.
This has significantly increased the number of data sources available to us, giving us more information to help improve operational efficiency. It enables us to make more data-driven decisions about how we enhance services here at MIA.
