5G Open RAN in US Defense: From Prototype to Full Deployment

According to local media reports, the Spanish Ministry of Defence has launched several tenders with a total value of €50 million to install private 5G networks for the military. The move aims to enhance military capabilities and reduce the reliance on satellite communications.

The largest tender seeks to build a testing and training centre to provide cyber defence training to the military. This project will be a significant boost for the country’s military and is expected to benefit the Spanish armed forces in preparing for future cyber warfare.

The second tender involves the launch of two private 5G standalone networks for two military facilities in Madrid. These networks will provide the military with enhanced communication capabilities and enable real-time monitoring of operations.

Additionally, the Spanish navy is seeking a portable private network communication system for two of its ships, which will reduce the dependence on satellite communications. This move will provide the navy with greater flexibility in its operations and improve its ability to respond to emergencies.

The Spanish air force is also interested in setting up private networks for its hangars. This initiative will improve the security of its operations and provide better communication between different departments, resulting in more efficient and coordinated efforts.

The first call for tenders is expected to launch at the end of March 2023. The private 5G networks will be a significant step forward for the Spanish military in terms of enhancing its capabilities and improving its response time to emergency situations.

In conclusion, the Spanish Ministry of Defence’s move to install private 5G networks for the military is a significant development in the country’s defence infrastructure. The initiative will not only enhance the military’s capabilities but also reduce its reliance on satellite communications, making it more self-sufficient.

Infosys will acquire a 75% stake in Telstra’s Versent Group for approximately $153 million to launch an AI-led cloud and digital joint venture aimed at Australian enterprises and public sector agencies. Infosys will hold operational control with 75% ownership, while Telstra retains a 25% minority stake. The JV blends Telstra’s connectivity footprint, Versents local engineering depth and Infosys global scale and AI stack. With Topaz and Cobalt, Infosys can pair model development and orchestration with landing zones, FinOps, and MLOps on major hyperscaler platforms. Closing is expected in the second half of FY 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions.
More than $14 billion has been invested across the CBRS stacklicenses, RAN, devices, infrastructure, sensors, and software. Over 420,000 CBRS radio nodes (CBSDs) are in service. The device ecosystem is broad: Apple and Samsung ship n48-capable handsets; industrial and FWA suppliers support n48 CPEs and routers; Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, JMA Wireless and others provide radio and DAS. This is not a pilot; it is production infrastructure. Refarming would force replacement or retuning of hundreds of thousands of base stations and millions of end devices, plus upgrades to SAS integrations and enterprise control planes.
A leading power utility in EMEA has tapped Ceragon to refresh its nationwide missioncritical communications backbone with highpower microwave, signaling a broader acceleration in utility OT network upgrades. The multiphase program, initiated earlier in 2025, is expected to deliver approximately $8 million in revenue for Ceragon and centers on replacing endoflife systems and scaling capacity across a countrywide private network. Following a detailed technical assessment led by a regional solutions provider, the utility selected Ceragons radios over competing global vendors.
