Fastweb+Vodafone Launches Italy’s First Sovereign AI Platform

Fastweb+Vodafone has introduced the FastwebAI Suite, a new suite of generative AI-based tools and services designed specifically for Italian enterprises and public administrations. This launch marks a significant step as the operator becomes the first telecom provider in Italy to offer sovereign AI solutions.

Built around a framework that ensures data residency and regulatory compliance, the FastwebAI Suite is hosted on domestic infrastructure and powered by a proprietary large language model (LLM) named MIIA (Modello Italiano di Intelligenza Artificiale). Developed and trained in Italian using certified national data, MIIA supports secure, transparent, and responsible AI deployment across sectors.

Fastweb+Vodafone Builds GenAI on Secure, Italian Infrastructure

The AI services run on Fastweb’s nationwide data centers and leverage the NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD supercomputing system, which has been operational since July 2024. These AI capabilities are further enhanced by cloud, Edge/MEC, and Cybersecurity platforms that ensure high protection standards.

What sets FastwebAI Suite apart is its end-to-end architecture. The solutions are completely based in Italy and are built to comply with European AI Regulation (AI Act), as well as privacy and copyright laws. A central tenet of the platform is strict data segregation, meaning information used within each application remains isolated and is not shared or reused outside its defined environment.

Vodafone AI Suite Gains Traction in Italy’s Public and Private Sectors

Several public institutions are already involved in the rollout and development of MIIA. Key collaborators include the Italian Senate, ISTAT (Italian National Institute of Statistics), and universities such as Sapienza University of Rome and University of Milan-Bicocca. In the private sector, media groups like Mondadori Group and Bignami Editori are early adopters of the platform.

As part of its broader public engagement, Fastweb+Vodafone signed an agreement with the Senate of the Republic. This agreement allows public documents—including legislative reports and publications—to be used as training material for MIIA. This collaboration is designed to boost transparency and help Italian institutions adopt AI responsibly.

Inside Fastweb+Vodafone’s Modular GenAI Suite for All Maturity Levels

FastwebAI Suite is designed to address a wide range of AI adoption needs. The offering includes:

  • FastwebAI Work: Enhances productivity through a real-time chatbot, an AI assistant for collaboration, document analytics, translation, and image generation tools.
  • FastwebAI Agents: Empowers IT teams to build and automate workflows using intelligent AI agents capable of handling tasks autonomously.
  • FastwebAI Custom: A modular option for organizations looking to tailor AI deployments to their specific operational requirements.

Additional modules will be introduced later in the year, including:

  • FastwebAI Governance & Compliance: For tracking, evaluating, and ensuring compliance of AI projects.
  • FastwebAI Security: Focused on the secure integration and monitoring of third-party AI tools.

These additions aim to create a comprehensive platform that can serve organizations at different stages of AI implementation, from early exploration to advanced integration.

Vodafone Offers Expert AI Consulting via FastwebAI Factory

Alongside its technology offerings, Fastweb+Vodafone provides consulting services supported by experts in AI, cloud, and cybersecurity. This consultative approach is informed by the company’s own experience integrating AI into its operational processes.

These services are coordinated through the FastwebAI Factory, the central hub for development and deployment, powered by the NVIDIA Supercomputer. This centralized model allows for scalable, high-performance AI solutions tailored to organizational goals.

Fastweb+Vodafone’s Hackathon Promotes AI Innovation in Italy

To spur innovation, Fastweb+Vodafone is organizing the FastwebAI Hackathon, scheduled for September 11-12, 2025. This 24-hour event invites students and startups to develop applications using the full capabilities of the FastwebAI Suite and the DGX-powered FastwebAI Factory.

Participants will compete for prizes, including 30-day access to a dedicated DGX compute node. A special recognition will be awarded to the project with the highest inclusivity, granting access to a Master’s program focused on Gender Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, organized by Fondazione Brodolini.

Vodafone and Fastweb Drive Italy’s Digital Transformation with Sovereign AI

With this launch, Fastweb+Vodafone is not only delivering a competitive AI offering but is also reinforcing its role in Italy’s digital transformation. By building a sovereign ecosystem based on responsible AI use, the company aims to close the technology gap between Italy and other European nations.

As stated by Walter Renna, CEO of Fastweb+Vodafone, “With FastwebAI Suite, we are offering businesses and public administrations solutions that ensure both data security and full control. Our goal is to foster an Italian AI ecosystem that involves public and private entities working together on an international scale.”

Positioning for Future Growth

FastwebAI Suite represents a long-term strategic investment in Italy’s AI future. With plans to expand its toolset and deepen collaborations across sectors, Fastweb+Vodafone is laying the groundwork for a robust, sovereign AI framework.

As regulations like the EU AI Act continue to shape the AI landscape, having domestic, compliant solutions will become a key differentiator. Fastweb+Vodafone is positioning itself to meet this demand with scalable, secure, and adaptable offerings.

For organizations operating in regulated industries or managing sensitive data, the FastwebAI Suite provides a practical path to adopt GenAI technologies while staying within the bounds of Italian and European law.
