The UK government signalled a rapid escalation of online safety measures that will bring AI chatbots squarely under the Online Safety Act and could introduce an under‑16 social media ban as early as this year. Ministers plan to amend the Online Safety Act 2023 so one‑to‑one interactions with AI systems fall within scope of illegal and harmful content controls. The government wants providers of large language model (LLM) assistants and agentic chatbots to implement safety‑by‑design, including stronger filtering, red‑teaming, abuse detection, and rapid takedown procedures for sexualised or otherwise illegal outputs.
A German court has ordered Meta’s Edge Network Services to pay Deutsche Telekom roughly €30 million for network services tied to Meta traffic, reshaping leverage in Europe’s peering and interconnection market. The dispute centered on whether Meta’s subsidiary used Deutsche Telekom’s private interconnection and peering points under a valid, paid contract after an earlier agreement expired. The court sided with the operator, concluding that continued use of those private interconnection facilities created obligations to pay for services over a multi-year period covering traffic from Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
The European Commission’s Digital Networks Act (DNA) is a sweeping proposal to harmonize telecom rules, catalyze next‑generation investment, and turn 27 national markets into a functional single market for connectivity. The DNA is timed to underpin an AI‑driven economy that depends on fiber, 5G/6G, and low‑latency cloud‑edge fabrics spanning borders. Longer licence durations and more flexible sharing are intended to reduce renewal risk and unlock investment in 5G densification and 6G prep. Mandatory national plans to phase out copper between 2030 and 2035 will free OPEX and energy, but require careful migration of regulated wholesale products, vulnerable users, and critical services.
Google has introduced a sharply priced AI Plus subscription in India to push generative AI into the mass market and counter OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go. Apple has secured a five-year deal to stream every Formula 1 session in the U.S., a move that will reshape live-sports distribution, traffic patterns, and product strategy across the streaming and telecom ecosystem. Starting with the 2026 season, Apple TV becomes the exclusive U.S. home for Formula 1, covering every practice, qualifying, Sprint, and Grand Prix for Apple TV subscribers. India’s mobile industry lobby is pushing for tariff corrections as network spending rises faster than service revenues. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) says operators face a growing mismatch between capital outlays and tariff-led returns. By its estimate, the cumulative gap up to 2024 was already around Rs 10,000 crore and is widening in 2025 as data consumption accelerates. COAI argues that a handful of large traffic generators (LTGs) are responsible for most network load without directly contributing to network build costs.
