AT&T has activated EchoStar’s 3.45 GHz spectrum across a massive swath of its macro network, delivering a step-change in speed and capacity that advances its 5G and fixed wireless agenda. AT&T has deployed the 3.45 GHz band on nearly 23,000 cell sites across the contiguous United States, touching more than 5,300 cities. Early field results point to up to 80% faster 5G download speeds in upgraded markets. The same spectrum injection is lifting AT&T’s fixed wireless access (FWA) product, Internet Air, with download speeds up by about 55%. Mid-band spectrum is the engine of 5G performance at scale.
Cisco’s intent to acquire Seattle-based NeuralFabric signals a decisive shift toward practical, domain-specific AI that meets real-world constraints around data, compliance, and infrastructure. Cisco plans to acquire NeuralFabric, an enterprise AI platform focused on building small language models (SLMs) from proprietary data with deployment across SaaS and on-premises environments. By focusing on SLMs trained on enterprise data and deployable in hybrid environments, Cisco aims to shorten time-to-value while keeping control where it belongs—inside the business. They reduce inference cost, improve latency, and can be deployed on-premises or at the edge—critical for sectors like telecom, financial services, and healthcare.
Jeff Bezos is stepping back into day-to-day operations as co-CEO of Project Prometheus, a new AI company reportedly funded with $6.2 billion to build “AI for the physical economy.” Project Prometheus will be co-led by Bezos and Vik Bajaj, an operator-scientist with leadership experience at Google X, Verily, and Foresite Labs. Early reports indicate the company is targeting engineering and manufacturing tasks across sectors such as aerospace, automotive, and computing hardware. Headcount is already near 100, drawing researchers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta, signaling an aggressive push for top-tier AI talent.
A consortium led by NTT DOCOMO, NTT, Nokia Bell Labs, and SK Telecom has shown that applying AI to both transmitter and receiver—“AI-AI”—can materially lift outdoor 6G performance, pointing to an AI-native air interface that adapts in real time to messy, real-world radio conditions. Using 5G New Radio as the baseline at 4.8 GHz, the AI-AI approach improved average throughput by roughly 18% across mixed environments and delivered up to a 100% gain in the most challenging sections of a curved public road. The net: AI at both ends consistently compensated for channel fluctuations outdoors, not just in controlled labs.
S&P Global Ratings has upgraded Bharti Airtel on the back of stronger earnings quality, healthier free cash flow, and a clearer deleveraging path, signaling a maturing Indian mobile market. The action reflects rising confidence that India’s tariff repair is sticking after mid-2024 hikes, with average revenue per user moving up and a larger share of premium 4G/5G subscribers. Airtel’s fiscal Q2 (India) showed operating momentum and cash discipline—key ingredients behind the rating move. Tariff increases and a richer subscriber mix pushed ARPU above the psychologically important INR 200 threshold, aided by postpaid gains, 4G/5G migration, and bundled content.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix is more than a spectacle this year—it’s a real-world benchmark for what 5G Standalone can deliver under extreme density, with T-Mobile integrating slicing, private 5G and edge video into broadcast, venue ops and public safety workflows. Broadcast teams are ingesting 360-degree and drone feeds over 5G with edge processing, venue commerce runs on a dedicated slice, and police leverage a 5G-connected drone for situational awareness. These deployments illustrate a practical blueprint for monetizing 5G SA and edge in venues, media, public safety and large events.
A UK tribunal has allowed a major consumer case to proceed against the country’s biggest mobile operators over alleged overcharging after device loans were repaid. The Competition Appeal Tribunal has certified a collective action alleging that Vodafone, BT’s EE, Virgin Media O2, and Three UK continued to bill customers for handsets after the device portion had been paid off. Claims tied to losses before October 2015 were dismissed as out of time, but post-2015 allegations will go to trial. The ruling does not determine liability; it sets the scope and allows disclosure and trial preparation.
Renewables are emerging as the default option for new AI campuses, but the share that is truly carbon-free around the clock will hinge on siting, storage, and market design. Annual REC matching is no longer sufficient for leading buyers; the bar is shifting toward hourly, 24/7 carbon-free energy matching initiatives. Yet diurnal and seasonal variability limits how much of a site’s load can be met by solar and batteries alone, especially in non-sunny regions or during prolonged weather events. Expect mixed portfolios: on-site renewables and batteries, off-site PPAs (solar and wind), emerging long-duration storage, and grid purchases backed by hourly certificates where available.
5G standalone networks change the service model. Operators can carve the network into slices with distinct latency, reliability, and throughput characteristics validated by 3GPP standards. That enables ultra-reliable low-latency communications for factory automation, connected vehicles, remote operations, and mission-critical services. It also enables differentiated quality for cloud gaming, broadcast-like video, and IoT control loops when combined with edge computing and time-sensitive networking. Jio’s position is that treating all traffic identically under a single “internet access” umbrella can inhibit these new uses. A ruleset that preserves open internet principles for consumers yet explicitly allows specialized services with assured QoS for enterprises is what the company seeks.
Multiple media reports say Verizon plans to cut roughly 15,000 jobs and shift about 180–200 company-owned stores to franchise operators, marking its most significant restructuring to date. According to reports citing unnamed sources, Verizon is preparing layoffs equal to about 15% of its workforce, with some estimates suggesting cuts could reach up to 20,000 roles when store conversions are included. Verizon ended 2024 with roughly 100,000 U.S. employees after several years of incremental reductions. Leadership has signaled the need to simplify operations and reset the expense base following heavy 5G investment and a more promotional market.
