MTN StarEdge Horizon: Private Layer 2 over Starlink
MTN has launched StarEdge Horizon, a Layer 2 service over SpaceX’s Starlink designed to move enterprise traffic on a private path to MTN points of presence (PoPs), bypassing the public internet and reducing latency, jitter, and operational complexity. The service extends a private Layer 2 domain from remote sites over Starlink into MTN regional PoPs, where enterprises can centralize internet egress, security, and policy. QoS and segmentation protect prioritized traffic, while multi-link redundancy reduces site-level downtime risks. By bringing a private Layer 2 architecture to Starlink, MTN’s StarEdge Horizon turns LEO from best-effort internet into a controllable enterprise transport.

African AI Compute Is Moving Local. Telecom operators and digital infrastructure players are racing to stand up AI-grade capacity on the continent as demand, latency, and data-sovereignty pressures converge. MTN Group is negotiating with US and European partners to co-invest in AI-ready facilities and offer capacity to enterprises across multiple African markets. Cassava Technologies is accelerating its sovereign cloud strategy with five AI-focused facilities slated across key African markets in the next 12 months. Earlier this year, Cassava partnered with Nvidia to launch an AI data centre in South Africa powered by the chipmaker’s GPUs, establishing a reference for accelerated infrastructure on the continent.

Lumen surpassing 1,000 customers on its Network-as-a-Service platform is a clear marker for where enterprise networking is headed. AI adoption, multi-cloud architectures, and distributed applications are pushing organizations toward on-demand, software-driven connectivity. Lumens platform bundles three core service types under a single digital experience. The platform integrates with major hyperscalers, enabling direct paths to AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. All can be provisioned self-service, scaled up or down based on demand, and stitched to cloud regions and third-party data centers via cloud on-ramps.
