Snap and Perplexity are joining forces to embed a conversational AI search experience directly into Snapchat’s chat interface, signaling a new distribution model for AI and a fresh monetization path for social platforms. Perplexity will integrate its AI-powered answer engine natively into Snapchat, beginning a global rollout in early 2026. Under the agreement, Perplexity will pay Snap $400 million over one year, via a mix of cash and equity, as the integration scales. Snap expects revenue contribution from the partnership to begin in 2026. The move is notable as Snap’s first large-scale integration of an external AI partner directly in-app.
AWS experienced a major outage centered on its US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia, triggering cascading failures across dozens of cloud services and dependent applications worldwide. The incident began in the early hours of Monday and was initially mitigated within a few hours, though residual errors and recovery backlogs persisted through the morning in US-EAST-1. Engineering updates point to a DNS resolution problem affecting a key database endpoint (DynamoDB) alongside internal network and gateway errors in EC2, which then propagated across dependent services such as SQS and Amazon Connect. When a foundational component like DNS or an internal networking fabric falters, service discovery and API calls fail in bulk.
ChatGPT users in the U.S. can now buy from Etsy sellers without leaving the conversation, with more than a million Shopify merchants “coming soon.” The feature, called Instant Checkout, is available to logged-in Free, Plus, and Pro users. It supports Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe, and credit cards. The flow is simple: ask for ideas, get curated products with images, prices, and reviews, tap Buy, confirm shipping and payment, and the merchant fulfills the order using its existing systems. Brands like Glossier, Skims, Spanx, and Vuori are expected to be part of the broader Shopify rollout.
SK Telecom has been named OpenAI’s exclusive B2C partner among Korean carriers as OpenAI opens its Korea office, signaling an aggressive push to scale consumer AI access and localize go-to-market in a strategically important market. The two companies unveiled a promotion for ChatGPT Plus, giving new or returning subscribers who purchase one month two additional months at no cost. Deutsche Telekom is using hardware, pricing, and partnerships to make AI a mainstream feature set across mass-market smartphones and tablets. Deutsche Telekom introduced the T Phone 3 and T Tablet 2, branded as the AI-phone and AI-tablet, with Perplexity as the embedded assistant and a dedicated magenta button for instant access. In Germany, the AI-phone starts at 149 and the AI-tablet at 199, or one euro each when bundled with a tariff, positioning AI features at entry-level price points and shifting value to services and connectivity. The bundle includes an 18-month Perplexity Pro subscription in addition to the embedded assistant, plus three months of Picsart Pro with monthly credits, which lowers the barrier to adopting AI-powered creation and search.
An unsolicited offer from Perplexity to acquire Googles Chrome raises immediate questions about antitrust remedies, AI distribution, and who controls the internets primary access point. Perplexity has proposed a $34.5 billion cash acquisition of Chrome and says backers are lined up to fund the deal despite the startups significantly smaller balance sheet and an estimated $18 billion valuation in recent fundraising. The bid includes commitments to keep Chromium open source, invest an additional $3 billion in the codebase, and preserve current user defaults including leaving Google as the default search engine. The timing aligns with a U.S. Department of Justice push for structural remedies after a court found Google maintained an illegal search monopoly, with a Chrome divestiture floated as a central remedy.
