Verizon’s digital sub-brand Visible is extending from app-only to omnichannel, adding BestBuy.com today and a nationwide in-store rollout on September 28. Visible offers unlimited data, talk, and text on Verizon’s 5G-capable network, plus unlimited mobile hotspot and no annual contracts. Customers keep the app-led experience - account setup, activation, billing, and support, while gaining retail conveniences like immediate SIM pickup, device compatibility checks, and help from trained associates. The Best Buy partnership signals a broader shift toward hybrid digital-retail engagement in U.S. wireless. Retail staff can guide eSIM setup and BYOD compatibility using GSMA eSIM standards and device tools, shortening time-to-service.
EchoStar has reset its strategy after regulator-driven spectrum sales, trading long-cycle infrastructure bets for an asset-light, capital-rich posture focused on satcom growth. Federal Communications Commission scrutiny over spectrum utilization forced EchoStar to accelerate decisions it had hoped to phase over time. Complaints from rivals spurred investigations into whether the company was meeting buildout and use obligations. Even if EchoStar prevailed in court, the process risked tying up key licenses and stalling its direct-to-device (D2D) ambitions. The company opted to monetize holdings and remove uncertainty rather than fight a prolonged, value-destructive battle.
SpaceX agreed to acquire EchoStar’s AWS-4 and H-Block spectrum licenses in a transaction valued at up to $17 billion, split between as much as $8.5 billion in cash and up to $8.5 billion in SpaceX equity. As part of the package, SpaceX will also cover approximately $2 billion in cash interest payments on EchoStar debt through November 2027. The parties have also signed a long-term commercial agreement that would allow EchoStar’s Boost Mobile subscribers to access SpaceX’s next-generation Starlink “Direct to Cell” service once live.
AT&T has agreed to acquire approximately 50 MHz of low- and mid-band spectrum licenses from EchoStar for about $23 billion in cash, a move that could reset capacity economics and regulatory debates across U.S. mobile and satellite markets. The transaction adds a significant block of licensed spectrum covering more than 400 U.S. markets, with closing targeted for mid-2026 pending regulatory approvals and customary conditions. Strategically, this portfolio densifies AT&T’s spectrum layer cake and narrows the mid-band depth gap with competitors in key markets, improving headroom for consumer, enterprise, and public-sector growth over the next five to seven years.
Hughes and Boost Mobile, subsidiaries of EchoStar, demonstrated cutting-edge multi-transport network management for the U.S. Navy, enhancing tactical edge communication through resilient satellite and 5G orchestration. The trial successfully integrated Hughes’ Smart Network Edge with Boost Mobile’s Open RAN 5G networks, providing secure, flexible communications in contested environments. This supports the DoD’s PACE initiative and shows the potential of Private 5G in defense operations.
