Palo Alto Networks is helping enterprises extend Zero Trust principles from IT to operational networks as they adopt private 4G and 5G. In this interview, Meir Cohen explains how AI-powered security frameworks ensure real-time visibility, strict segmentation, and policy consistency across IT, OT, and private mobile environments—laying the foundation for secure, scalable Industry 4.0 operations.
Nokia’s tie-up with OneLayer brings carrier-grade security and OT-aware visibility into one stack, addressing the core adoption barrier for private 5G/LTE in utilities: protecting highly distributed, mission-critical operations at scale. Together, the companies deliver a zero-trust model that spans radio to application: authenticated device identity, continuous posture assessment, role-based segmentation at the cellular (DNN/QoS flow) and IP layers, and orchestrated mitigation. Bottom line: With utilities accelerating private LTE/5G rollouts, Nokia and OneLayer are packaging the controls that regulators, insurers, and boards now expect—bringing OT-aware zero trust into the cellular domain without adding operational complexity.
The Federal Communications Commission plans a November vote to rescind a January ruling that tied carrier cybersecurity obligations to CALEA, resetting the regulatory posture after high-profile intrusions tied to Chinese state-linked actors. In January, the FCC interpreted the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) to require telecommunications carriers to protect their networks against unlawful access or interception, and paired that interpretation with a proposal to require written cybersecurity plans and baseline controls. The commission signals it will pivot to a more targeted, collaborative posture with carriers instead of a one-size-fits-all mandate.
MTN has launched StarEdge Horizon, a Layer 2 service over SpaceX’s Starlink designed to move enterprise traffic on a private path to MTN points of presence (PoPs), bypassing the public internet and reducing latency, jitter, and operational complexity. The service extends a private Layer 2 domain from remote sites over Starlink into MTN regional PoPs, where enterprises can centralize internet egress, security, and policy. QoS and segmentation protect prioritized traffic, while multi-link redundancy reduces site-level downtime risks. By bringing a private Layer 2 architecture to Starlink, MTN’s StarEdge Horizon turns LEO from best-effort internet into a controllable enterprise transport.
Verizon is transforming healthcare infrastructure with a dual-network approach that combines private 5G and neutral host connectivity. Hospitals like AdventHealth and Tampa General are enhancing AI-powered diagnostics, real-time telemetry, and secure staff communications—while ensuring strong public mobile coverage for patients and visitors. This hybrid model, built on Ericsson’s platform, supports HIPAA compliance, device density, and future scalability for smart hospitals.
T-Mobile US expanded its Advanced Network Solutions portfolio with Edge Control and T-Platform, aiming to deliver private network-like performance over its nationwide 5G-Advanced footprint while simplifying how enterprises deploy, govern, and scale edge workloads. Edge Control enables cellular traffic to exit locally and flow directly into an enterprise’s edge compute environment, rather than traversing centralized cores or the public internet. T-Platform is T-Mobile’s customer portal for managing business services, including Edge Control. Traditional MEC offers low-latency access to hyperscaler edge zones but often relies on internet or backhaul paths that add jitter and sovereignty concerns.
T-Mobile has launched a purpose-built Cyber Defense Center alongside a new Executive Briefing Center, signaling a maturing, integrated approach to cyber resilience across its network and enterprise business. T-Mobile unveiled a centralized Cyber Defense Center at its Bellevue, Washington headquarters to detect, disrupt, and respond to threats in real time, complemented by an Executive Briefing Center that showcases industry use cases and a tie-in to the company’s always-on Business Operations Center for continuity during crises. T-Mobile’s Business Operations Center remains the operational backbone for network health, customer experience continuity, and coordinated disaster response, integrating data-driven dashboards that support rapid decisioning during natural disasters, outages, and high-impact events.
Defense, public safety, transport, and critical infrastructure need deterministic connectivity that moves with the mission. Traditional rollouts struggle with time-to-service, power, and backhaul constraints. Portable, “all-in-one” 5G modules help bridge that gap by putting the radio, core, and management closer to the edge, enabling local breakout, resilience, and consistent QoS. With 3GPP Release 16/17 features maturing and SA-first private networks becoming standard, demand is shifting from pilots to field-ready systems that can be mounted in vehicles, worn as backpacks, or staged in temporary zones.
