SK Telecom has been named OpenAI’s exclusive B2C partner among Korean carriers as OpenAI opens its Korea office, signaling an aggressive push to scale consumer AI access and localize go-to-market in a strategically important market. The two companies unveiled a promotion for ChatGPT Plus, giving new or returning subscribers who purchase one month two additional months at no cost. While the immediate focus is consumer-facing, SK Telecom indicates the partnership will extend toward business services and potential collaborations across the broader SK Group.
A research team in China and Hong Kong has demonstrated a thumbnail-sized 6G transceiver chip that spans nine radio bands from 0.5 to roughly 110 GHz and achieved triple‑digit Gbps data rates in the lab. Scientists led by Peking University and City University of Hong Kong reported an “all-frequency” 6G prototype fabricated on thin‑film lithium niobate, integrating functions that today require multiple RF front‑ends into a single 1.7 x 11 mm die. The device covers sub‑6 GHz, microwave, mmWave, and sub‑THz bands and demonstrated over 100 Gbps throughput under controlled conditions.
Ericsson is embedding an agentic AI framework into its NetCloud platform to accelerate self-healing, intent-driven operations across private 5G, Wireless WAN, and SASE. Ericsson is evolving its AI assistant, ANA, from a prompt-based helper into a multi-agent system that can interpret high-level intents, plan workflows, and coordinate specialized agents to act across the enterprise networking stack. Ericsson’s rollout will be staged. A troubleshooting orchestrator is planned for Q4 2025 to handle high-frequency pain points such as offline devices and degraded radio conditions, with a projected reduction in downtime and support cases by more than 20 percent.
KT disclosed that IMSI information for 5,561 subscribers may have been exposed in connection with a wave of fraudulent mobile payments starting August 27, concentrated in parts of southwestern Seoul. As of midweek, authorities tallied 278 unauthorized transactions totaling roughly 170 million won. KT reported the incident to the Personal Information Protection Commission and the Korea Internet & Security Agency, notified impacted users, and pledged compensation. A government special team has begun a coordinated probe, and the science minister publicly pressed KT to cooperate fully and restore trust.
SpaceX’s $17 billion purchase of EchoStar spectrum signals a deliberate push to blend satellite and mobile connectivity at consumer scale. SpaceX is acquiring EchoStar’s AWS-4 and H-Block licenses, adding roughly 1.9–2.0 GHz spectrum into its portfolio for direct-to-device (D2D) service in the U.S. Owning licensed spectrum lets SpaceX widen capabilities beyond roaming-style add-ons, potentially toward a branded service that spans home broadband and handset connectivity. A two-year window for first compatible handsets is a realistic baseline. Analysts broadly expect Starlink to expand via partnerships: wholesale arrangements to MNOs for satellite fallback, and potentially an MVNO to bring a Starlink-branded phone plan to market.
France’s space agency CNES has selected Capgemini, Thales, and Thales Alenia Space to lead a national demonstration of 5G direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity under the France 2030 investment program. The consortium will deliver “U DESERVE 5G,” a government-backed project designed to prove that standard mobile devices and fixed terminals can connect directly to a satellite using 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) technology. The team will launch a low Earth orbit (LEO) demonstrator satellite equipped with an active antenna payload able to form and steer beams directly to devices. The trial will evaluate interoperability with terrestrial 5G, handover behavior between networks, and user experience under varying coverage conditions
Maher Terminals has deployed Nokia’s Private 4G and Edge computing solutions to digitize operations at its 450-acre New Jersey facility. By partnering with Nokia and Future Technologies Venture LLC, the terminal now uses real-time data and rugged industrial devices to streamline cargo handling and enhance network reliability.
Fresh data from Nokia and GlobalData shows that private wireless and on-premise edge are delivering rapid ROI, unlocking AI at scale, and improving security and sustainability across industrial sites. Industrial operations need deterministic connectivity, real-time data, and strong security to automate safely and sustainably. Across 115 organizations, 87% of adopters reported a return on investment within one year after deploying private wireless with on-prem edge. Setup costs were lower than alternatives for 81% of respondents, and 86% cut ongoing costs. Critically, 94% deployed on-prem edge alongside private wireless, and 70% are already powering AI use cases.
Comcast is migrating Xfinity residential email accounts to Yahoo Mail, a shift that underscores how ISPs are offloading non-core applications to specialized providers. Comcast is transitioning existing Xfinity email mailboxes to be hosted by Yahoo Mail while allowing customers to keep their current @comcast.net or @xfinity.com email addresses. The migration is being phased, with customers notified by Comcast when their account is eligible and given guidance to complete setup. After migration, users access their mailbox through Yahoos web and mobile clients or supported third-party email apps. Mail, folders, contacts, and calendar data are moved as part of the process, with Comcast publishing specific steps and FAQs on support pages to reduce friction.
Apple's fall software updates introduce admin-grade switches to govern how corporate users access ChatGPT and other external AI services across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Apple is enabling IT teams to explicitly allow or block the use of an enterprise-grade ChatGPT within Apple Intelligence, with a design that treats OpenAI as one of several possible external providers. Practically, that means admins can set policy to route requests either to Apples own stack or to a sanctioned third-party provider, and disable external routing entirely when required.
Alaska Air Groups move to deploy SpaceX Starlink across Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines by 2027 signals a decisive pivot to low-latency, LEO-based inflight connectivity for U.S. carriers. Inflight WiFi has moved from perk to productivity platform, and latency not just bandwidth now defines user experience for video conferences, collaboration tools, and gaming. By standardizing on Starlink's low Earth orbit (LEO) network, Alaska is targeting ground-like performance gate-to-gate across regional, narrowbody, and widebody fleets. Alaska cites sub-100 ms latency and up to 500 Mbps per aircraft, enabling real-time messaging, cloud apps, and streaming on multiple devices without gating performance to a handful of users.
Maxis will host China Mobile Internationals CMLink MVNO in Malaysia, expanding CMIs cross-border mobile footprint and deepening a wholesale partnership focused on 4G/5G services and innovation. China Mobile International (CMI) has selected Maxis as the host network for CMLink in Malaysia, formalized at the 2025 China Mobile SEA Cooperation Conference in Kuala Lumpur. The move extends CMLink's presence beyond markets such as the UK, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, and Italy, and brings a cross-border, China Malaysia mobile proposition to students, professionals, and frequent travelers. For Maxis, it signals an assertive MVNO enablement strategy designed to monetize its network through wholesale while diversifying revenue.
