According to ABI Research, 5G fixed-wireless access (FWA) services are increasingly being seen as a competitive alternative to traditional fixed broadband in both developed and emerging markets. The firm predicts that the number of 5G subscriptions of FWA could reach 72 million by 2027, which would represent 35% of the total fixed-wireless market.
Intel made headlines recently as it withdrew from the 5G laptop market, ceasing its partnership with MediaTek. This development was not entirely unexpected, as analysts pointed to the underwhelming sales of 5G laptops and Intel's ongoing struggles with 5G devices.
German chemical firm BASF plans to establish a private 5G network at a facility in Belgium's Port of Antwerp, partnering with local networking expert Citymesh. This development, which follows a series of cellular-connected Industry 4.0 trials in the region, has been dubbed "the first private 5G network" in the port by local media.
The adoption of 5G services in India's subscriber base is expected to boost data consumption as they upgrade to higher data packages to access faster speeds. This increase in data usage is anticipated to result in higher average revenue per user (ARPU) and better return metrics for telecommunication companies (telcos).
Schneider Electric, Capgemini, and Qualcomm Technologies have announced their collaboration on a first-of-its-kind 5G-enabled automated hoisting solution. The three companies have joined efforts on the design and installation of the solution at Schneider Electric’s hoisting lab in Grenoble, France. Replacing wired connections with wireless and unifying existing wireless connections from Schneider Electric’s industrial automation system, the 5G Private Network solution demonstrates how it can simplify and optimize digital technology deployment at scale across industrial sites — from steel plants to ports.
Telstra CEO Vicki BradyBrady thinks the role of the operator is to become an “ecosystem builder” that brings together technologies such as 5G, AI, automation, edge computing, and “an explosion of applications”. She also warned that if operators don’t change, they run the risk that the “value created over our networks gets captured by others.” Indeed, Brady advised operators to get comfortable with the idea of not always being in control of the end-to-end solution.
Singtel announced that it is one of the world’s first to have 5G Security-as-a-Slice (SecaaS) as a capability, which proactively identifies and blocks cyber threats at the network level, thus preventing them from reaching the network’s users. According to a survey by Singtel among its customers in December 2022, nine out of 10 users expressed concern about security but only three had installed cybersecurity applications to protect their digital assets.
Cisco and NTT announced plans to collaborate to drive Private 5G adoption across the Automotive, Logistics, Healthcare, Retail, and Public sectors. Together, the companies can rapidly enable critical Industry 4.0 capabilities such as push-to-talk ‘walkie talkie’ communications, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), always-connected PCs (for digital frontline workers), machine vision (e.g., predictive maintenance, PPE detection), and more.
EnterpriseWeb is presenting stage 3 of its award-winning multi-vendor Intel 5G RAN testbed. Based on a secure edge gateway use-case, the testbed showcases dynamic configuration of Intel® Ethernet Controller E810 and network functions to continuously optimize processing of secure packets. It demonstrates consistent and predictable low-latency and energy consumption at scale, enabling Telecom MEC and Sustainability initiatives.
A drone flying cell tower is a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a 5G base station, which can be deployed to provide coverage in remote or hard-to-reach areas. These flying cell towers can be rapidly deployed and offer several advantages over traditional stationary cell towers, including increased flexibility, faster deployment, and the ability to cover larger areas with fewer towers.
CELLSMART, the cellular intelligence division of SmartCIC, has launched its latest Global Cellular Performance Survey, which shows that maximum 5G download speeds available in the field have reached nearly 1 Gbps. Test results showed Norway (994 Mbps) and Spain (993.60 Mbps) topping the rankings for maximum 5G download speeds for indoors and outdoors.
This project entails communication between multiple drones in mid-air and various interconnected urban elements for the successful delivery of a package to its designated mobile collection point. It combines multiple technologies - including 5G, C-V2X communications (the same technology employed in modern connected cars), RTK technology, and mobile location. This proposal, a part of Telefónica's 5G Madrid project, has been made possible by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation through Red.es with co-financing from FEDER funds under the established call for 5G grants. To ensure the success of this project, Telefónica has partnered with Correos as their use case recipient and also teamed up with Gradiant, Ericsson, and Genasys.
