AI is everywhere in telecom, yet most pilots never make it into production because the industry’s data, tooling, and operating models are not ready for scaled automation. Recent industry research suggests that about 95% of AI pilots in telecom fail to scale beyond proofs of concept. Leaders are moving from pilots to platforms by embedding AI in the systems that run the business and anchoring every initiative to measurable outcomes. Telecom AI will not scale through pilots alone; it scales when embedded in the systems that run revenue, experience, and networks.
Telefónica reports €77 billion invested over ten years to expand sustainable, resilient connectivity, with SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure) as the strategic anchor. The operator now serves nearly 350 million accesses, has passed 81.4 million premises with FTTH, and runs one of the largest ultra-broadband footprints globally, second in scale only to China. Spain is Telefónica’s showcase for fiber-led modernization. Dense FTTH has enabled a managed copper switch-off, which simplifies operations, cuts energy use, and improves service quality. The operator targets net zero by 2040 - ten years ahead of many international timelines—and reports a 52% reduction in CO2 emissions across the value chain from 2015 to 2024.
HUMAIN, a Saudi PIF-backed AI company, introduced Horizon Pro, an “agentic AI” PC built on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite, positioning it as a new class of Windows laptop where on-device AI drives workflows, decisions, and user interaction. At Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit in Maui, HUMAIN CEO Tareq Amin unveiled the Horizon Pro PC and the company’s agentic software layer, Humain One, which runs on top of Windows 11 and is slated for formal launch at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh.
Deutsche Telekom has launched 5G connectivity for the latest Apple Watch models using 3GPP RedCap over its 5G standalone network, marking a strategic first for Germany’s wearable market. This is one of the first mass-market RedCap launches tied to a high-volume consumer device, moving RedCap from trials and modules into mainstream adoption. It signals that 5G standalone is shifting from a technology milestone to a commercial differentiator, and that the wearables category is entering a new performance and battery-life phase beyond LTE-M and classic LTE. Expect accelerated RedCap adoption, intensified operator competition on SA coverage and certifications, and a new wave of enterprise-grade wearables built for 5G from the start.
Fresh off its merger, VodafoneThree has locked in eight-year vendor deals with Ericsson and Nokia to underpin a £11 billion UK network build that is front-loaded for rapid 5G Standalone coverage gains. VodafoneThree selected Ericsson and Nokia as primary technology partners for one of the largest privately funded mobile infrastructure programs in Europe, with contracts collectively valued at over £2 billion. In year one, close to three quarters of the population are targeted for access to its fastest 5G services, rising to about 90% population coverage on 5G Standalone by year three and reaching roughly 99.95% by 2034 under a regulated, fully funded build plan.
Verizon has launched a 6G Innovation Forum to accelerate research, trials, and standards alignment for the next generation of wireless. The forum convenes major RAN suppliers, including Ericsson, Samsung Electronics, and Nokia - alongside platform and device ecosystem players such as Meta and Qualcomm Technologies. The stated goal is an open, diversified, and resilient 6G ecosystem with global alignment from the outset. Verizon will back the forum with hands-on environments, starting with a dedicated 6G Lab in Los Angeles. Early priorities include testing new spectrum bands and bandwidths, and validating interoperability with mainstream standards bodies.
Tens of billions in new US tech commitments are set to reshape the UK’s data center footprint, power needs, and network design over the next four years. Microsoft plans to deploy $30 billion into UK AI infrastructure, its largest commitment in the country, split between new-build capacity and financing via partners such as Nscale. Alphabet added roughly £5 billion for AI research and infrastructure over two years and opened a new data center campus in Hertfordshire. These moves sit under a broader US-UK “Tech Prosperity Deal” announced during a state visit, spanning AI, quantum, and nuclear cooperation. The overall vector is clear: more compute, closer to UK users, on a faster timeline.
Nokia and Deutsche Bahn have activated a commercial-grade 5G Standalone network on the 1900 MHz band to validate Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) operations on live tracks. The partners have launched a 5G SA deployment using the 1900 MHz (n101) spectrum band on DB’s digital railway test field in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), Germany. The network is built with Nokia AirScale radio equipment and an optimized, cloud-native 5G core, and it operates on moving trains on outdoor tracks. The setup includes built-in failover, self-healing, and real-time monitoring to sustain service continuity in mission-critical environments.
EchoStar has reset its strategy after regulator-driven spectrum sales, trading long-cycle infrastructure bets for an asset-light, capital-rich posture focused on satcom growth. Federal Communications Commission scrutiny over spectrum utilization forced EchoStar to accelerate decisions it had hoped to phase over time. Complaints from rivals spurred investigations into whether the company was meeting buildout and use obligations. Even if EchoStar prevailed in court, the process risked tying up key licenses and stalling its direct-to-device (D2D) ambitions. The company opted to monetize holdings and remove uncertainty rather than fight a prolonged, value-destructive battle.
Deutsche Telekom is formalizing a sovereignty-first cloud strategy with the launch of T Cloud and new leadership roles that aim to reduce European dependence on non-EU technology stacks. At Digital X in Cologne, Deutsche Telekom’s enterprise arm T-Systems introduced T Cloud, an independent, multi-cloud offering positioned around “levels of sovereignty.” For telcos, public-sector buyers, and regulated enterprises, the message is clear—data location, jurisdiction, and operational control are now first-class design choices, not afterthoughts. T Cloud is pitched as a seamless partner ecosystem spanning public and private cloud, with services tailored to workload criticality and data classifications.
The launch includes a hardened 5G smartphone and a portable, secure radio platform built to form and extend tactical networks in austere environments. The Mission-Safe Phone and the upgraded Banshee 5G Tactical Radio signal that 3GPP-based private wireless is mature enough for deployed operations, not just demonstrations. The Banshee refresh integrates 5G connectivity into a rugged, portable “network in a box” designed for fast setup, hardening, and easy transport. By pairing a purpose-built handset with a ruggedized, rapidly deployable radio hub, Nokia is selling an interoperable stack instead of point products.
France’s space agency CNES has selected Capgemini, Thales, and Thales Alenia Space to lead a national demonstration of 5G direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity under the France 2030 investment program. The consortium will deliver “U DESERVE 5G,” a government-backed project designed to prove that standard mobile devices and fixed terminals can connect directly to a satellite using 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) technology. The team will launch a low Earth orbit (LEO) demonstrator satellite equipped with an active antenna payload able to form and steer beams directly to devices. The trial will evaluate interoperability with terrestrial 5G, handover behavior between networks, and user experience under varying coverage conditions
