Orange has reached a non-binding agreement to acquire Lorca’s 50% stake in MasOrange for €4.25 billion in cash, aiming for sole control of Spain’s leading operator by customer base. The transaction would shift MasOrange from joint control (Orange and Lorca JVCO, owner of MásMóvil) to full ownership by Orange. Full control simplifies governance, accelerates synergy capture, and gives Orange greater flexibility in network investment, pricing, and product roadmap execution in Spain. Orange expects to sign a binding agreement before end-2025, subject to agreement on final terms. Completion is targeted for the first half of 2026, assuming standard merger-control review.
Vodafone named Dell Technologies a strategic infrastructure provider for a five-year Open RAN buildout across Europe, signaling a move from trials to scaled, automated 5G networks. Vodafone will expand one of Europe’s largest Open RAN footprints using Dell infrastructure as part of a multi-year radio access modernization program. Dell will supply its PowerEdge XR8000 series servers, including the XR8620t and the latest XR8720t with Intel Xeon 6 SoC. Vodafone also plans to adopt the Dell Telecom Infrastructure Automation Suite (DTIAS) to provide the Infrastructure Management Service within its Open RAN architecture, designed to automate Day 0/1/2 lifecycle operations for O-Cloud infrastructure.
NEC is moving to scale its cloud and SaaS business support capabilities with a $2.9 billion acquisition of CSG Systems International, positioning Netcracker at the center of the combined telecom monetization play. CSG brings a sizable recurring-revenue portfolio in digital BSS, billing, charging, and customer engagement used by communications, cable, media, and digital service providers, complementing Netcracker’s OSS/BSS, orchestration, and service automation strengths. The all-cash deal values CSG at approximately $2.9 billion on an enterprise value basis and has unanimous board approval, with closing targeted for 2026 pending CSG shareholder approval and customary antitrust and other regulatory reviews.
Ericsson, Nokia, and Fraunhofer HHI jointly demonstrated a proof‑of‑concept codec that delivers meaningfully higher compression than today’s widely deployed standards—H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, and H.266/VVC—without a notable rise in complexity. The partners emphasize energy efficiency and scalability, which are critical for battery‑powered devices, edge compute, and large streaming workloads. Their submission was positively received by the ITU‑T Video Coding Experts Group and ISO/IEC MPEG, the bodies that jointly steward the H.26x/MPEG lineage. The work is positioned as an on‑ramp to the next standardization phase, targeting readiness to support commercial deployment around 2029–2030, in step with 6G timelines.
Vodafone is partnering with Irish firm Zinkworks on Rapid RIC, a central platform that blends secure data analytics, a visual low-code interface, and code-generating AI to create and operate RAN applications, or rApps. The goal is ambitious but specific: cut time-to-market from months to weeks, scale deployments across markets, and improve service quality, capacity, and energy use. The platform is slated for early 2026 availability and will run primarily on Vodafone’s private Google Cloud Platform environment. Rapid RIC uses GenAI to generate production-grade code from visual designs, enabling radio engineers to turn domain knowledge directly into software without deep AI or ML skills.
Nokia delivered a stronger-than-expected third quarter, with comparable operating profit reaching €435 million against consensus of about €342 million. Group net sales rose 12% to €4.83 billion, above forecasts, driven by Optical Networks and cloud-related demand tied to AI data centers. The stock jumped double digits intraday and added billions in market value, reflecting newfound confidence after a challenging first half. The recovery now is concentrated in network infrastructure rather than mobile RAN, underscoring where customers are actually spending to handle AI-era traffic patterns. Nokia nudged its full-year operating profit outlook to €1.7–2.2 billion, with a reporting change related to scaling down passive venture investments partly in play.
Germany’s largest operator is turning e-waste into engagement currency with a take-back drive that mixes material recovery with headline incentives. Deutsche Telekom estimates 195 million unused phones are sitting idle in Germany, locking up valuable materials and ESG progress. The company is reframing those devices as an urban mine—rich in gold, copper, and critical minerals—and as a lever to scale circularity ahead of its 2030 ambition to make all IT and network technology, and most end-user devices, recyclable or reusable. By the end of 2024, the operator had already taken back more than 11 million phones across the group.
A planned merger between Lynk Global and Omnispace aims to fuse spectrum assets, satellite technology, and SES’s multi-orbit infrastructure to scale 3GPP-compliant direct-to-device services worldwide. The combined company will pair Omnispace’s globally coordinated S-band holdings, about 60 MHz anchored by ITU filings and aligned to non-terrestrial network standards—with Lynk’s patented multi-spectrum D2D platform. SES, already an investor in both firms, will become a major strategic shareholder and provide access to its GEO and MEO assets and ground network to improve coverage, resiliency, and time-to-market. Lynk has already launched commercial messaging and alerting in small markets with a handful of LEO spacecraft.
Enterprise demand is shifting from project-based consulting to managed, outcome-driven operations infused with AI and data. By combining WNS's scaled operations with Capgemini's consulting, engineering, and cloud capabilities, the company aims to capture this demand with end-to-end, AI-enabled "run and transform" offerings. The deal expands Capgemini's delivery footprint in India, strengthens its business services unit, and adds vertical platforms and playbooks that can be cross-sold to Capgemini's installed base in North America and Europe. For WNS clients, it opens access to broader transformation capabilities—cloud, data, and engineering—while preserving managed services continuity.
Defense, public safety, transport, and critical infrastructure need deterministic connectivity that moves with the mission. Traditional rollouts struggle with time-to-service, power, and backhaul constraints. Portable, “all-in-one” 5G modules help bridge that gap by putting the radio, core, and management closer to the edge, enabling local breakout, resilience, and consistent QoS. With 3GPP Release 16/17 features maturing and SA-first private networks becoming standard, demand is shifting from pilots to field-ready systems that can be mounted in vehicles, worn as backpacks, or staged in temporary zones.
Deutsche Telekom has launched a first in Europe: seamless eSIM profile transfers across Android and iOS, removing long-standing friction when customers switch devices or platforms. Customers on Deutsche Telekom can now move their mobile subscription as an eSIM from Android to iOS and vice versa without a carrier app, QR code, or paperwork. The transfer process is initiated in the settings of the new device and handled natively by the operating system, which detects the previous phone and orchestrates the migration. Deutsche Telekom validates device, tariff, and user eligibility in the background, then authorizes the transfer, preserving the phone number and plan.
India’s nationwide launch of BSNL’s “Swadeshi” 4G stack moves the country from a services-first model to domestic production of core telecom equipment at national scale. India formally launched an indigenous 4G stack for state-run BSNL, alongside more than 97,500 towers announced from Jharsuguda, Odisha. Officials highlighted early reach metrics, noting that roughly 92,000 sites are active and connecting an estimated 22 million users. Telecom equipment sovereignty has become a board-level issue as operators de-risk supply chains, comply with trusted source mandates, and balance costs amid rising traffic and spectrum refarming needs.
