Low Earth orbit broadband is bifurcating into Western- and China-led ecosystems, with strategic consequences for telecom and cloud connectivity worldwide. Starlink's scale in the West is meeting a fast-maturing Chinese counterweight centered on state-backed constellations and a growing commercial space sector. The result is a split that will influence landing rights, equipment supply, data sovereignty, and service availability across regions. Three forces are converging: mass-production launch capability, maturing inter-satellite optical links, and rising demand for resilient, low-latency backhaul. Governments are also reclassifying satellite broadband as critical infrastructure, accelerating public funding and procurement pipelines. Demonstrated high-rate laser crosslinks indicate a credible trajectory toward in-space backbones that rival Western systems.
India's AI oversight for telecom is moving from recommendations to implementation, with policy review and technical workstreams running in parallel. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has issued recommendations on leveraging artificial intelligence and big data in telecom, including the creation of an independent statutory authority for AI governance. The proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Authority of India (AIDAI) is envisioned to promote responsible AI development and regulate sectoral use cases. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has initiated projects with research bodies and universities focused on how to ensure and test AI trustworthiness.
Automotive digitization now hinges on 5G's ability to deliver reliable, low-latency, and scalable connectivity that 4G/LTE cannot sustain for safety-critical use cases. Advanced driver assistance, cooperative perception, and remote operations require millisecond-class response and deterministic reliability across dense traffic conditions. 5G Standalone (SA) with Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (URLLC), improved positioning, and enhanced uplink meets these thresholds, enabling vehicles and infrastructure to exchange time-sensitive data continuously. This is the foundation for C-V2X, high-fidelity telematics, and closed-loop control that 4G/LTE struggles to support consistently. 5G enables dynamic traffic orchestration, energy-aware routing for EVs, and advanced safety services that can reduce incidents and congestion.
The 4.44.94 GHz range offers the cleanest mix of technical performance, policy feasibility, and global alignment to move the U.S. ahead in 6G. Midband is where 6G will scale, and 4 GHz sits in the sweet spot. A contiguous 500 MHz block supports wide channels (100 MHz+), strong uplink, and macro coverage comparable to C-Band, but with more spectrum headroom. That translates into better spectral efficiency and a lower total cost per bit for nationwide deployments while still enabling dense enterprise and edge use cases.
Beijing's first World Humanoid Robot Games is more than a spectacle. It is a live systems trial for embodied AI, connectivity, and edge operations at scale. Over three days at the Beijing National Speed Skating Oval, more than 500 humanoid robots from roughly 280 teams representing 16 countries are competing in 26 events that span athletics and applied tasks, from soccer and boxing to medicine sorting and venue cleanup. The games double as a staging ground for 5G-Advanced (5G-A) capabilities designed for uplink-intensive, low-latency, high-reliability robotics traffic. Indoors, a digital system with 300 MHz of spectrum delivers multi-Gbps peaks and sustains uplink above 100 Mbps.
South Korea's government and its three national carriers are aligning fresh capital to speed AI and semiconductor competitiveness and to anchor a private-led innovation flywheel. SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus will seed a new pool exceeding 300 billion won (about $219 million) via the Korea IT Fund (KIF) to back core and foundational AI, AI transformation (AX), and commercialization in ICT. KIF, formed in 2002 by the carriers, will receive 150 billion won in new commitments, matched by at least an equal amount from external fund managers. The platforms lifespan has been extended to 2040 to sustain long-cycle bets.
A new joint solution from Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) and the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA) consolidates electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and antenna measurements into a single, production-grade test chamber, signaling a shift in how satellite payloads will be validated for Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) and mission-critical services. By integrating both disciplines in one chamber, TASA can validate RF performance, emissions, and immunity under consistent test conditions and configurations, improving time-to-launch and de-risking interoperability with terrestrial networks. The TASA deployment combines R&S hardware, software, and engineering with a locally built Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) reflector to achieve dual-mode EMC and antenna measurements in one chamber.
As 5G expands, reduced-capability (RedCap) and enhanced RedCap (eRedCap) IoT devices face pressure to transition from 4G. But adoption has lagged due to price and value challenges. This article explores why OEMs are holding back, the role of low-power DSP modem platforms like Ceva’s, and how software-defined radio and flexibility are key to unlocking 5G’s potential in high-volume, low-bandwidth IoT applications.
In 2025, 5G surpasses 2.25 billion global connections, marking a pivotal shift toward mainstream adoption. While North America leads in performance and per capita usage, challenges in spectrum policy and enterprise integration remain. This in-depth report from 5G Americas explores the rise of Standalone 5G, the promise of 5G-Advanced, the reality of private network deployments, and the need for smart, forward-looking spectrum strategy.
Smart mobility is reshaping how the world moves, powered by 5G, AI, and edge computing. From autonomous vehicles and real-time logistics to AI-driven drones and connected public transport, intelligent transportation systems are redefining urban mobility, logistics, and industrial automation. As global investment and collaboration grow, the transportation industry is transforming into a $11.1 trillion smart ecosystem focused on sustainability, efficiency, and connectivity.
Satellite-mobile convergence is rapidly shifting from niche to mainstream, enabling global mobile coverage through Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN). With direct-to-device (D2D) standards now supported by 3GPP Releases 17–19, traditional mobile phones can connect directly to satellites. This development has unlocked use cases in emergency response, smart agriculture, logistics, and IoT—paving the way for a future where 6G, edge AI, and multi-orbit architectures redefine connectivity. Learn how telecoms, enterprises, and regulators are navigating the path to a fully connected planet.
