UK regulator Ofcom has opened formal investigations into BT (including EE) and Three after nationwide voice service outages this summer impaired access to other networks and to emergency services. BT notified Ofcom of a software-related failure that disrupted interconnect voice services to and from the EE mobile network on 24–25 July 2025. During the incident, many BT and EE customers could not complete mobile calls to other networks or reach emergency services. Three separately reported a UK-wide disruption to voice services on 25 June 2025, which also affected some customers’ ability to contact emergency services.
Switzerland’s SBB has deployed an Ericsson IMS/VoLTE platform that interworks with legacy GSM-R, delivering Europe’s first live bridge between public 4G voice and mission-critical railway communications. Ericsson and SBB completed a nationwide IMS/VoLTE integration that extends reliable voice communications across Switzerland’s 3,100 km rail network and removes dependency on public 3G roaming for coverage gaps outside GSM-R footprints. The IMS core integrates multi-supplier elements and preserves EIRENE features such as functional numbering, group calls, emergency stop calls, and onboard announcements, ensuring safety-critical behavior is maintained. It also demonstrates that mission-critical requirements can be met over modern IP telephony when engineered with the right interworking, governance, and testing.
AST SpaceMobile is signaling a pivotal year ahead as it moves from demonstrations to commercial direct-to-device coverage with major operators and an aggressive launch schedule. The company’s plan to begin “intermittent nationwide” service in early 2026, followed by continuous coverage later in the year, is also a forcing function for device vendors, standards work, and MNO network integration. As AST scales to 45–60 BlueBird satellites by end-2026, pass frequency and overlap increase to support “continuous” service across the U.S., Europe, Japan, and other priority markets. AST reports over $3.2 billion in cash and liquidity.
Virgin Media O2 has struck a multi‑year agreement with Starlink Direct to Cell to deliver satellite‑to‑mobile service across rural UK not‑spots, positioning O2 as the first British operator to integrate Starlink’s constellation with licensed mobile spectrum. Branded as O2 Satellite, the service will initially support messaging and basic data on existing smartphones when users move beyond terrestrial signal. O2 is targeting landmass coverage beyond 95% within a year of launch, using Starlink’s 650+ low‑Earth orbit satellites to act as “cell sites in space.” Customer rollout is planned for early 2026, with pricing to follow and an extra monthly fee anticipated.
Australia is moving quickly to shore up the 000 emergency call service ahead of the bushfire season by hauling telco chiefs to Canberra and fast‑tracking reforms. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has opened a compliance investigation, and Optus has appointed Kerry Schott to lead an independent technical review into the failures. The reforms build on proposals flagged after the nationwide Optus outage in November 2023 and signal a shift from after‑the‑fact reporting to proactive assurance for a service that must be available under extreme conditions.
India’s nationwide launch of BSNL’s “Swadeshi” 4G stack moves the country from a services-first model to domestic production of core telecom equipment at national scale. India formally launched an indigenous 4G stack for state-run BSNL, alongside more than 97,500 towers announced from Jharsuguda, Odisha. Officials highlighted early reach metrics, noting that roughly 92,000 sites are active and connecting an estimated 22 million users. Canberra is signaling an industry shake-up after hundreds of emergency calls failed to reach Triple Zero, with four incidents linked to fatalities. Optus, Australia’s second-largest operator and a subsidiary of Singtel, reported a technical failure that prevented 624 calls from connecting to emergency services (000), affecting customers across Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has opened an investigation into compliance with the Emergency Call Service rules, which require carriers to ensure 000/112 calls connect regardless of network status.
Verizon Value is rolling out enhanced prepaid international services across its Simple Mobile and Total Wireless brands, sharpening its competitive edge in global roaming and cross-border communications starting August 28, 2025. The offers blend unlimited international calling to large country sets, global texting, and expanded roaming with 5G access on Verizon's network, including 5G Ultra Wideband on select tiers. Simple Mobile adds unlimited global texting across all plans and scales international calling and data inclusions from entry to premium tiers. Total Wireless retools its unlimited structure with a five-year price guarantee (taxes and fees included), adds 95 more calling destinations (up to 180 countries on higher tiers), and doubles roaming coverage to 30+ countries.
Maxis will host China Mobile Internationals CMLink MVNO in Malaysia, expanding CMIs cross-border mobile footprint and deepening a wholesale partnership focused on 4G/5G services and innovation. China Mobile International (CMI) has selected Maxis as the host network for CMLink in Malaysia, formalized at the 2025 China Mobile SEA Cooperation Conference in Kuala Lumpur. The move extends CMLink's presence beyond markets such as the UK, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, and Italy, and brings a cross-border, China Malaysia mobile proposition to students, professionals, and frequent travelers. For Maxis, it signals an assertive MVNO enablement strategy designed to monetize its network through wholesale while diversifying revenue.
