The quarter’s growth underscores a resilient access capex cycle despite macro uncertainty, with fiber and fixed wireless access (FWA) deployments offsetting sluggish cable spend. Fiber PON platforms and 5G FWA customer premises equipment (CPE) drove the uptick, while DOCSIS infrastructure outlays fell 13% year over year on weaker Remote PHY Device (RPD) purchases and a slowdown in new virtual CMTS (vCMTS) licenses. The competitive center of gravity in broadband is shifting. Operators prioritizing XGS-PON rollouts and 5G FWA are growing faster and spending more, while cable operators are pacing upgrades and deferring some distributed access architecture (DAA) investments.
SpaceX wants the FCC to count Starlink as “advanced” broadband in its annual Section 706 report, a move that could reshape funding, benchmarks, and competition in rural internet buildouts. In 2024, the agency set a 100/20 Mbps benchmark, added affordability and adoption metrics, and floated a long-term goal of 1 Gbps/500 Mbps. SpaceX argues that excluding LEO distorts the national picture. The company says Starlink serves more than 2 million U.S. subscribers and posts median peak-hour speeds near 200 Mbps today. Rural electric co-ops and community telcos counter that LEO networks remain capacity constrained and variable.
SpaceX’s $17 billion purchase of EchoStar spectrum signals a deliberate push to blend satellite and mobile connectivity at consumer scale. SpaceX is acquiring EchoStar’s AWS-4 and H-Block licenses, adding roughly 1.9–2.0 GHz spectrum into its portfolio for direct-to-device (D2D) service in the U.S. Owning licensed spectrum lets SpaceX widen capabilities beyond roaming-style add-ons, potentially toward a branded service that spans home broadband and handset connectivity. A two-year window for first compatible handsets is a realistic baseline. Analysts broadly expect Starlink to expand via partnerships: wholesale arrangements to MNOs for satellite fallback, and potentially an MVNO to bring a Starlink-branded phone plan to market.
The Small Cell Forum’s 2025 Market Forecast points to a market shifting from experimentation to scaled deployment, with enterprise demand and new business models driving a faster cadence. SCF forecasts cumulative small-cell shipments to reach 61 million units by 2030, supporting an installed base of roughly 54.4–54.5 million radio units and annual vendor/integrator revenues of about USD 4.23 billion. Indoor enterprise deployments continue to dominate, representing about 60% of rollouts in 2023–2024. SCF expects 5G SA small cells to grow at a 56% CAGR through 2030, with two-thirds of enterprise small cells co-located with edge compute by 2030.
Lumen has introduced Wavelength RapidRoutes, a pre-engineered 100G/400G service with a 20-day delivery SLA aimed at removing months-long bottlenecks from enterprise and hyperscaler connectivity. The company is packaging pre-defined, high-demand optical paths as a catalog of ready-to-deploy waves, removing custom design cycles from many standard routes. Lumen’s RapidRoutes offers 100G and up to 400G wavelength services on prioritized intercity routes with an industry-forward 20-day service delivery SLA, shifting the customer experience from quote-engineer-build to select-provision-activate on pre-engineered paths. A portal-enabled experience with AI-driven tools and more than 300 automated workflows underpins ordering, change management, and capacity scaling.
The launch includes a hardened 5G smartphone and a portable, secure radio platform built to form and extend tactical networks in austere environments. The Mission-Safe Phone and the upgraded Banshee 5G Tactical Radio signal that 3GPP-based private wireless is mature enough for deployed operations, not just demonstrations. The Banshee refresh integrates 5G connectivity into a rugged, portable “network in a box” designed for fast setup, hardening, and easy transport. By pairing a purpose-built handset with a ruggedized, rapidly deployable radio hub, Nokia is selling an interoperable stack instead of point products.
France’s space agency CNES has selected Capgemini, Thales, and Thales Alenia Space to lead a national demonstration of 5G direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity under the France 2030 investment program. The consortium will deliver “U DESERVE 5G,” a government-backed project designed to prove that standard mobile devices and fixed terminals can connect directly to a satellite using 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) technology. The team will launch a low Earth orbit (LEO) demonstrator satellite equipped with an active antenna payload able to form and steer beams directly to devices. The trial will evaluate interoperability with terrestrial 5G, handover behavior between networks, and user experience under varying coverage conditions
Telefonica is weighing a bid for Vodafone Spain from Zegona, setting up a pivotal consolidation moment in a four-player Spanish market under tight EU scrutiny. State-aligned and strategic investors appear open to a scaled Spain-centric strategy that leans into Europe while pruning Latin American exposure. Spain's market has shifted after the combination of Orange Spain and MasMvil (MasOrange), creating a heavyweight rival to Telefonica. A successful deal would reshape Spains operator landscape and signal how far EU policymakers will allow scale plays to go in mature markets. The European Commission has shown willingness to approve in-country consolidation with tough conditions.
DE-CIX India has become the first internet exchange in India to integrate Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite service, marking a strategic advance in non-terrestrial network (NTN) capabilities. With 25–220 Mbps throughput and low latency, Starlink's interconnection via DE-CIX enables local breakout, cloud on-ramps, and SD-WAN optimization across hard-to-reach regions. As regulatory approvals move toward completion, satellite connectivity shifts from pilot to production-ready, opening new paths for mobile backhaul, enterprise WANs, and e-governance.
Reliance Jio's 2026 IPO could be India’s largest public listing, with a projected valuation between ₹10–12 lakh crore. As Jio Platforms prepares to float 2.5–5% equity, the move could reshape 5G pricing, digital infrastructure investments, and ARPU strategies across the telecom stack. With cloud, AI, and enterprise services gaining traction, Jio’s IPO positions it as a multi-product digital powerhouse. Airtel and Vodafone Idea may face intensified competition as capital deployment and service bundling accelerate.
O2 Telefónica Germany has deployed a Large Telco Model powered by Tech Mahindra and NVIDIA to transform its operations into a service-centric, AI-native system. By integrating telemetry, tickets, and service topology into a unified AI fabric, the model enables automated root-cause analysis, dispatch optimization, and intent-based workflows. This marks a tangible shift toward autonomous network operations, with measurable gains in operational efficiency, SLA compliance, and customer experience.
India's telecom usage is now predominantly indoors, and TRAI's new property rating framework puts digital connectivity on par with core utilities. TRAI's chairperson flagged a decisive shift: most mobile data is consumed inside homes, offices, malls, hospitals, and transit hubs. Connectivity inside buildings is moving from convenience to necessity. TRAI's 2024 Regulations introduce a voluntary, performance-based star rating that assesses how ready a property is to deliver high-quality broadband and mobile connectivity. The framework encourages developers to embed Digital Connectivity Infrastructure (DCI) at design stage, aligns with Digital India and Smart Cities Mission, and invites ministries and agencies to incorporate DCI into guidelines, tenders, and training.
