How LMT Deployed Private 5G Without Interrupting Port Workflows

Through an incremental, well-planned rollout, LMT integrated the private 5G network with existing port systems without disrupting daily operations, maintaining Wi-Fi overlap during migration.

Question:
How did your team handle integration with existing port systems and ensure that daily operations were not disrupted during deployment?

Karlis Vilciņš (Head of Systems Integration Business, LMT):
This was an area where we had to plan very carefully. We coordinated our work by taking into account the arrival and departure schedules of container ships, as well as the ongoing on-site activities within the terminal.

When we activated the private 5G network, we ensured that the existing Wi-Fi system remained operational. We didn’t remove the Wi-Fi before the 5G deployment was fully functional — there was a period of overlap, where both systems operated simultaneously.

We then gradually introduced connectivity for all equipment and devices — including machinery, vehicles, and yard clerks’ terminals — one step at a time.

The approach was incremental, migrating piece by piece while leaving the old system running to prevent any service interruptions. Only once we confirmed that the new private 5G network was working seamlessly did we phase out the legacy Wi-Fi system.

This ensured that daily operations were never disrupted during the transition.
