Question:
From a technical perspective, how did LMT design and implement the private 5G network to ensure reliable coverage across cranes, vehicles, and container yards?
Karlis Vilciņš (Head of Systems Integration Business, LMT):
We began the project in 2024, starting with test installations after performing detailed coverage and capacity calculations to ensure that the network would work as intended.
During the test phase, we validated different use cases and demonstrated to the customer that the solution was fully operational.
As a system integrator, we also tested different core network solutions and various radio solutions to determine which configurations best suited the specific operational and environmental conditions at the port.
A major part of the project involved network integration — not just building the private 5G network, but also integrating it with the company’s existing local and enterprise IT networks.
The process was highly collaborative, involving close work with the customer to understand their operational needs. We tested thoroughly before full deployment to ensure the network would deliver consistent and reliable coverage across cranes, vehicles, and container yards.
This step-by-step approach — combining technical validation, integration, and customer feedback — was how we achieved success in the deployment.
